An individual made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader immediately preceding it was made public, sparking debate about potential gains made from confidential information of American actions.

Changing Odds in Wagers

Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the leader would be no longer in control by the end of January increased in the time leading up to former President Trump stated on the weekend that Maduro had been seized.

One account, which registered on the site in December and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $nearly half a million from a starting bet of over $32,000.

It remains unclear. This unidentified trader had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Probability Spikes Before News Break

Trading information shows that users estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the afternoon of the Friday before the event.

But these probabilities had jumped to 11% by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the morning of January 3rd, indicating a rapid movement in market sentiment just before the public announcement was made.

"This specific wager has all the signs of a transaction based on inside information," commented an industry expert.

A handful of other individuals also profited large payouts from bets on the same outcome.

Political Attention Intensifies

Some lawmakers are growing concerned.

A bill introduced on Monday would prevent federal workers from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a market.

Industry Context

Forecasting platforms have become increasingly popular in recent years, with users able to wager on everything from sports outcomes to political events.

This sector faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. However it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.

Trading on insider information is a crime in the stock market, but there are more ambiguous rules in the prediction market space.

A company executive for another major platform said their site "explicitly prohibits insider trading of any form."
