Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The former head of state was convicted of plotting a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under home detention pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a precautionary step after fresh information emerged.

This included trying to remove his ankle monitor and a call for a supporters' gathering that could enable a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the judge said intelligence from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's "intention to break the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on social media on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your couch? I urge you to fight with us."

He said the vigil would be so supporters could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the judge's determination was the potential of his transfer to embassies near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of planning to seek refuge through a consular facility", a declaration said.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was determined responsible of orchestrating a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, President Lula.
