Crew Member Discloses Depression Following Wave of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also carried well-known figures.
The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, referring to a phone call from a mission companion in the period after the journey.
She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the well-wishers whose kindness helped save her. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.
She concluded that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the mission, including spotlight on her scientific work and platforms for her activism.
