Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals buying such drugs should be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified weight return.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Accounts

People who have come off the medication explain a powerful return of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and I was suddenly starving," described one woman.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers caution that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural management.
