Exactly 30 anniversary after the first Toy Story film debuted, launching the animation giant as a major animation studio and introducing audiences to beloved characters like Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), who are now household names.

Coming in 2026, the next chapter is set to arrive. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, offering a glimpse into the storyline but leaving fans wondering how it will resolve the ending of Toy Story 4.

The preview reveals the young girl — who received Andy's toys when he grew up — getting a brand new plaything, one that alarms the familiar toy group. Bonnie acquires her initial digital gadget, and she is thrilled about it.

Theoretically, the amphibian-inspired device will come to life just like the rest of her playthings. However, the toys seem to view it as a threat coming to replace them, which it likely will.

The Cowboy's Comeback: Mysteries from Toy Story 4

An element the teaser doesn't touch on is what the sheriff is returned with his friends in the child's bedroom. The end of Toy Story 4 saw him embark on a fresh journey with Bo Peep (the actress), journeying with a carnival and assisting giveaway items find good homes.

Certainly, the filmmakers will explain the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Seeing him show up in the familiar setting without warning is somewhat puzzling, however. It also raises questions whether Bo Peep will have returned with him. And where is the stuntman toy (Keanu Reeves)?

Connections from the Previous Film

At the very least, some aspects are carrying over from the prior film. The last thing the cowboy did before setting off for his new life was hand over his symbol of authority to the cowgirl (the voice actor), entrusting her in charge of Bonnie's bedroom. In the teaser shows the insignia attached to her shirt.

Hopefully she is remains the driving force among the toys.
