Why the Democratic Party Refuses to Release their Post-Mortem Report on the 2024 Race: The Inside Story.

The decision from the DNC to suppress the release of its internal autopsy report on the last presidential race is stunning yet not surprising. Opposed to hard truths, the party's leadership apparatus behaves more like a communications shop rather than a political organization committed to building local power capable of prevailing at the polls.

A Climate That Avoids Dissent

Hesitant to break with the prevailing attitude demanding unity, the committee has remained within the influence of the previous administration throughout 2025. Making public an official autopsy would have indicated that party leaders actually want to encourage public discourse regarding the errors that enabled the former president to win re-election. Yet, the committee is acting under the pretense that there's nothing to glean following the electoral catastrophe from the last cycle.

"Here’s our North Star: is this good for winning elections? Should the answer be negative, it is an unnecessary diversion from our fundamental goal," an explanation which was presented for withholding the analysis.

Critical Problems a Report Might Have Addressed

Any valuable post-mortem with any value would not dodge key points of failure. This encompasses:

  • Voter Alienation: The loss of millions of voters who supported the party's candidate in 2020 became a critical factor during the tight recent race.
  • A Choice to Seek Re-election: The unwavering choice by the incumbent to stay in the race, coupled with an extremely delayed step-aside, is seen by some as robbing Democratic voters the chance for open primaries.
  • Losing Touch With Everyday Americans: While facing economic anxiety, the electoral effort is criticized for bowing to powerful financial backers and not managing to address the role of corporate greed.
  • The Gaza Factor: The refusal to shift an approach regarding a major international conflict is cited as losing significant blocs, especially among young people, Arab-Americans, and Muslim Americans.
  • A Decline in Young Voter Support: Extensive evidence indicates a major decrease of support for the party among the youth electorate.

A Pattern Shunning Scrutiny

The decision to withhold aligns with a longstanding habit of sidestepping difficult realities. It echoes a situation in which nearly all Democratic officeholder in Washington acquiesced to an incumbent's insistence on seeking another term until a disastrous public debate performance led to a reversal.

At the same time, a significant majority of the electorate had been repeatedly informing researchers that they opposed the incumbent to seek re-election.

Financial Concerns

An honest report could probe questions regarding where money went, including the amounts were directed to high-priced advisors and ad buyers over the course of a campaign that managed to spend an enormous sum over a few months.

A Broader Problem

Fundamentally, the secrecy of the official autopsy points to a submission to the existing power structure that oversaw a disastrous national race. The message for the party's base – including millions of dedicated activists – is that they do not have a right to know the lessons party chiefs say they discovered based on an analysis drawing from feedback from all states.

A political entity incapable to critically review where it went wrong finds it difficult to climb out of the pattern which was so helpful to their opponents.
